Finance Assistant (Project STRIDES)

About the role

The Finance Assistant will support the Finance Manager in delivering the STRIDES (Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems) project in Uganda. This role involves handling day‑to‑day accounting tasks, processing payments, and ensuring compliance with donor and local regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Process supplier/vendor payments, staff advances, reimbursements, consultant fees, and mobile‑money transactions within established timelines.
• Prepare and review payment vouchers, ensuring proper coding, authorization, and donor compliance.
• Record all financial transactions in the GFAS accounting system and post journals and invoices promptly.
• Perform weekly bank and mobile‑money reconciliations and regular cash reconciliations.
• Maintain accounts payable, monitor outstanding balances, and follow up on settlements.
• Review staff advances ledger, track liquidations, and ensure accountability.
• Prepare statutory reports such as VAT and Withholding Tax, ensuring correct coding and compliance.
• Execute monthly general‑ledger reconciliations and support end‑of‑month close processes.
• Assist with budgeting, budget‑vs‑actual analysis, and donor reporting.
• Maintain complete, organized financial documentation for audit and donor requirements.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, and fiscal control principles.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Team‑oriented attitude with attention to detail.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Excel.
• Experience with GFAS or similar accounting software.
• Understanding of GAAP accounting standards.
