Accountant – Full-time Finance Owner

About the role
We are looking for an experienced Accountant to take full ownership of MedX International’s finance function in Kampala. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate books, ensuring compliance, and providing the founders with a clear picture of the company’s financial health.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain QuickBooks Online chart of accounts with proper class/location tagging and post all transactions within five working days.
- Perform monthly bank, mobile‑money and balance‑sheet reconciliations, ensuring no unreconciled items older than 30 days.
- Prepare the monthly close pack – profit & loss by product line, cash position, AR/AP ageing, and grant vs commercial split – within five working days of month‑end.
- Update a rolling 13‑week cash‑flow forecast and flag runway risks on a weekly basis.
- Issue customer invoices within 48 hours of contract or milestone, chase receivables and report Days Sales Outstanding weekly.
- Enforce the approval matrix for expenses and manage grant‑specific budgeting, fund separation and documentation.
- Handle statutory compliance with URA filings (PAYE, VAT, WHT), NSSF contributions and annual returns.
- Process payroll, maintain the fixed‑asset register, control mobile‑money transactions and support external audits.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- CPA(U) qualification.
- 3–4 years of accounting experience, including at least two years in a donor‑funded, NGO or health‑sector environment with grant accounting responsibilities.
- Strong attention to deadlines and documentation, with the ability to enforce controls and escalate issues when necessary.
Required skills
- Hands‑on expertise with QuickBooks Online, including chart of accounts and class/location tracking.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets for reporting and audit file preparation.
- Experience preparing URA filings and managing statutory compliance.
