Scientist – Human Demography & Epidemiology

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Scientist to lead research on human demography and epidemiology within its forest‑governance programmes. The role combines scientific guidance, project management and partnership development to generate high‑impact knowledge for sustainable land‑use.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts, methods and outputs meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and CIFOR leaders to design and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise and disseminate peer‑reviewed publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists, students and staff.
• Represent CIFOR at national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders and pursue additional research funding.
• Plan, monitor and report on research activities, including budgeting and donor reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., demography, epidemiology, social sciences).
• Demonstrated experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications and successful fundraising for research proposals.
• Proven ability to develop and manage budgets across multiple projects.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and multidisciplinary teams in developing‑country contexts.
