Kiswahili Translator – Gender Dialogue Facilitator's Toolkit

About the role

The horizont3000 (h3) Framework Programme 2023-2026, co-funded by the Austrian Development Agency, works with communities such as smallholder farmers, disadvantaged women, children and youth, and indigenous people. Its community gender dialogues aim to challenge harmful norms and promote equitable decision-making. A Facilitator's Toolkit was developed in English, and the consultancy seeks a specialist translator or firm to produce a clear, accurate and culturally appropriate Kiswahili version so that rural facilitators in Kenya and Tanzania can use it.

Key responsibilities

• Translate the complete toolkit (about 48,340 words in English) into natural Kiswahili, including all modules, exercises and facilitator prompts.
• Translate image captions, callouts and other visual text.
• Proofread and copyedit, correcting grammar and incorporating feedback from the client.
• Optionally insert the text into the original graphic design templates, keeping fonts, spacing, page numbering and image placement consistent.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Translation, Linguistics, Communications or a related field.
• At least 5-7 years of professional experience in English-to-Kiswahili translation, localization and editing.
• Strong knowledge of gender-sensitive concepts, able to convey them respectfully without distorting the gender-transformative intent.
• Demonstrated experience with facilitator guides, gender-transformative training materials or social development toolkits.
• Remote work, with ability to join virtual meetings across East African and European time zones.

Required skills

• English-to-Kiswahili translation and localization.
• Optional: desktop publishing tools such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop.
• Ability to deliver print-ready and digital formats.
