Special Education Assistant (1‑1) for Student with Down Syndrome

About the role

This full‑time position provides one‑on‑one instructional and behavioral support to a teenage male student with Down syndrome in a distinct classroom. The assistant works closely with the lead teacher to ensure the student’s safety, promote social skills, and facilitate academic participation both inside school and during community outings.

Key responsibilities

• Build a trusting, supportive relationship with the student.
• Maintain safety by preventing elopement and supervising transitions.
• Provide behavior support, including de‑escalation and response to self‑injurious or aggressive actions.
• Assist with toileting, restroom use, and lifting the student as needed.
• Support the student during meals, community outings, and academic tasks.
• Implement and follow the individualized behavior plan under teacher guidance.

Required profile

• Calm, energetic, and physically flexible individual.
• Patient and able to maintain firm boundaries while being flexible.
• Understanding of positive behavior support and de‑escalation strategies.
• Willingness to be coached and collaborate with the lead teacher.
