About the role
This full‑time position supports the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHH) service pathway in a K‑8 school environment. The assistant works under the direction of special and mainstream teachers to help supervise, care for, and instruct students with special needs.
Key responsibilities
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments and materials so that all special‑education students can participate.
- Administer tests, homework, grade papers and organize student records to assist teachers in tracking progress.
- Provide first aid and medical assistance when needed.
- Support students with personal care needs related to medical conditions or physical limitations.
- Attend meetings, IEP sessions and in‑service trainings (e.g., CPR, emergency procedures).
- Collaborate regularly with teachers and parents to discuss student progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders, ensuring safety and consistency.
- Teach academic, social and daily‑living skills in both individual and group settings.
- Maintain instructional materials and student files, including adapting resources and tracking attendance.
Required profile
- Experience or interest in working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Ability to follow teacher directions and adapt instructional content.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with teachers, parents and support staff.
- Willingness to attend training sessions and stay current on best practices.
Required skills
- First aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Knowledge of behavioral intervention strategies.
- Familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and related documentation.
