Special Education Assistant – Medically Fragile (1.0 FTE)

About the role

The Special Education Assistant supports medically fragile students at Orca K-8, ensuring they receive appropriate care, instruction, and supervision both in the classroom and during non‑classroom times. This full‑time position works closely with teachers, parents, and support staff to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and maintain a safe learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Adapt classroom activities and materials under teacher direction to enable participation of all special education students.
• Administer first aid, medical assistance, and personal care as needed for medically fragile students.
• Assist with instruction in academic, social, and daily living skills in both individual and group settings.
• Implement and monitor behavioral plans, ensuring safety and consistency.
• Maintain student records, attendance, and instructional materials.
• Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, and other staff regarding student progress and IEP objectives.
• Attend meetings, IEP sessions, and professional development such as CPR and emergency procedures.

Required profile

• Experience or training in supporting students with medical fragility or significant physical limitations.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and adapt materials for diverse learning needs.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration with teachers, parents, and health professionals.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive classroom environment.

Required skills

• First aid certification.
