IDM-Africa Fellow – Infectious Disease Modelling

About the role

The IDM‑Africa Fellowship offers a one‑month on‑site placement in Kampala followed by eleven months of remote mentorship. Fellows will develop and validate an infectious‑disease model, produce scientific outputs and translate findings for policy makers.

Key responsibilities

• Complete a documented and validated infectious‑disease model with reproducible code in R, Python or equivalent.
• Submit a final project report, a lead‑author manuscript to an open‑access journal, and a policy brief for policymakers.
• Provide bi‑weekly progress updates and quarterly performance reports via the IDI iBRIDGE system.
• Attend monthly peer‑fellow meetings, present at quarterly review meetings, and share findings at workshops or conferences.

Required profile

• Hold a master’s degree (or be pursuing a PhD) in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, physics, data science, statistics or a health‑related field.
• Be affiliated with a sub‑Saharan African institution within the EDCTP Association and willing to relocate for the placement.
• Have practical experience leading a substantial component of an infectious‑disease modelling project.
• Demonstrate commitment to a career in infectious‑disease modelling and public‑health impact.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one modelling platform or programming language (R, Python or MATLAB).
• Ability to manage datasets, formulate models, run simulations and interpret results.
