Business Director and Principal Officer

About the role

The Business Director and Principal Officer will lead the Uganda operations of a digital health and insurance company. This dual‑mandate role combines commercial growth responsibilities with statutory compliance as the registered Principal Officer with the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda.

Key responsibilities

• Own the Uganda business plan, P&L and commercial strategy, driving growth, distribution and profitability.
• Identify, negotiate and close B2B partnerships with insurers, mobile operators, banks, MFIs and corporates to increase health and insurance premium volumes.
• Manage the full sales cycle for key accounts, from prospecting to onboarding and performance monitoring.
• Ensure full compliance with the Insurance Act, 2017 and IRA guidelines, preparing and submitting all required returns and risk reports.
• Provide quarterly performance, financial, compliance and risk updates to the Board and Group.
• Recruit, coach and manage the local Uganda team, fostering a culture of accountability and customer‑first execution.
• Explore new digital distribution channels and propose product and market expansion opportunities in microinsurance and health‑financing.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and monitor commercial and risk metrics such as loss ratios and partner performance.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading a commercial business unit with full P&L responsibility.
• Demonstrated success in building and managing B2B partnerships in the insurance or financial services sector.
• In‑depth knowledge of Uganda’s insurance regulatory framework and experience acting as a statutory principal officer.
• Strong leadership skills with a track record of building high‑performing teams.
• Ability to analyse financial and risk metrics and drive strategic decisions.
