Postdoctoral Fellow – Governance and Trade (FLEGT)

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead research on governance and trade under the FLEGT initiative. Based in Kampala, Uganda, the fellow will provide scientific guidance, develop research concepts, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to advance forest governance and trade policies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and leaders to define and implement research activities.
• Write, supervise, and publish scientific communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity‑building initiatives.
• Supervise students and staff, mentoring junior scientists.
• Represent the institution in national, regional, and global forums related to forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional funding for relevant research areas.
• Plan, monitor, and report on research activities, including financial aspects.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., natural resource management, social sciences).
• Experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects across regions and continents.
• Successful track record in budget development and financial management.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization, fundraising, and proposal development.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and conducting fieldwork in developing countries.
• Experience in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
