Recovery Officer

About the role

FINCA Uganda is hiring a Recovery Officer for its branches and service centers, reporting to the Recovery Manager. The officer secures timely repayments for non-performing and written-off loans through daily field visits to delinquent customers, supports branch and bailiff activities, maintains good customer relationships and helps control losses by managing overdue credit facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and coordinate loan recovery for active and written-off loans at assigned branches, and ensure the escalation process is followed and documented.
• Negotiate payments and secure promises to pay from active and written-off customers to meet targets.
• Comply fully with internal policies, procedures and regulatory guidelines in collection activities.
• Visit customers' securities periodically and advise management on their condition; identify accounts needing legal action.
• Coordinate allocation of bad loans to external debt collectors or court bailiffs, obtain approvals and ensure bailiffs receive written instructions.
• Review loan recovery procedures periodically and advise management on developments.
• Maintain the Field Collections Tool, update it daily and report status to the supervisor.
• Ensure collateral liquidation follows proper procedure and guide branch staff and recovery agents.
• Follow up on recoveries so they are booked and reconciled regularly, and manage reporting for assigned cases.
• Train and guide branch staff on recovery best practices and foreclosure of bad loans.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a business-related field such as banking, microfinance, commerce or accounting.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in the credit function of the financial industry.
• Ability to use and communicate in local languages.

• Basic understanding of microfinance operations, rules, regulations, lending and credit risk management.
• Problem-solving, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Patient approach to dealing with clients.
• Organizing, recording and filing skills, with attention to accuracy and efficiency.
