Senior Sustainability Officer

About the role

FINCA Uganda is looking for a Senior Sustainability Officer based at Head Office in Kampala, reporting to the Head of Risk. The role is the technical lead and subject matter expert on sustainability and climate-related risk, embedding sustainability into strategy, risk management and operations, and implementing the Sustainability and Climate Risk Policy, the Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) policy and related governance frameworks across the credit portfolio and business operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the implementation of ESG and climate-risk frameworks, policies and due diligence tools; review high-risk credit transactions, manage corrective action plans, run climate stress tests and ensure compliance with Bank of Uganda and international sustainability standards.
• Integrate climate-risk and sustainability considerations into business strategy, operations and procurement, and work with business teams on green lending, climate finance and financial inclusion products.
• Oversee the collection, tracking and validation of ESG data, and lead audit-ready sustainability disclosures, regulatory submissions and funder reports.
• Build relationships with development finance institutions, funders, regulators and industry networks, and benchmark performance against peers and best practice.
• Launch green products, climate-resilience programs and resource-efficiency initiatives, and run awareness and training programs to embed ESG commitments.
• Advise senior management and the Executive Committee on ESG trends, risks and regulations, and direct sustainability audits, certifications and external assessments.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Business, Finance, Economics, Banking or a relevant field.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience managing sustainability programs and sustainability communications.
• An ESG certification or a professional qualification in a sustainability-related course is an added advantage.

Required skills

• Exceptional verbal, written and creative communication, with a track record of quality reports and presentations.
• Strong organisational and administrative skills, able to manage multiple complex projects at once.
• Ability to turn corporate strategy into clear performance objectives, make firm decisions on escalated high-risk transactions and uphold ethical standards.
